And again. And again.

Because you're:

Drowning in quarterly targets?

Juggling stakeholder demands?

Racing between back-to-back meetings?

Putting out daily operational fires?

Always slipping to the bottom of your priority list?

There will never be a "perfect time" to build your brand!
B2B Marketing: Leaders Are The Real Brand Assets

Leaders are the real brand assets. Yet most companies still spend more on marketing campaigns than on amplifying the people who sell projects, who build new relationships and who bring the brand to life every day.

Top-tier professional services and consulting firms can be spending 100K+ a month on LinkedIn ads and paid engagement, pushing campaigns into feeds and annual spend into seven figures.

A firm's leaders are the ones building trust, shaping reputation and influencing how others see the business.

Leaders who use LinkedIn and other channels every day are the core brand investment. They create trust, credibility and influence in ways no campaign can.

The smarter approach is to take some of that marketing spend, combine it with some L&D budget and invest it in showing leaders how to do it well: how to show up, how to be consistent, how to use visibility with intent.

Investing in their leadership brand strategy, positioning and reach is not a ‘nice to have’, it's where the long-term value lies.

If your organisation isn't amplifying your people, you’re leaving brand equity on the table.
<p class=" visually-hidden update-components-image__container

The Brand Balance Sheet: The Bottom Line

Reputation isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s your most liquid asset. In finance, a liquid asset is something you can turn into value quickly: cash in the bank, shares you can sell etc.

Reputation works the same way.

Every decision is either a deposit or a withdrawal.

The yield shows up in the opportunities (or lack of) that come your way.

Unlike skills or job titles, it doesn’t depreciate when the market changes direction.

The strongest brands, both personal and corporate, treat reputation as part of their strategy, not as an afterthought.

If you’re not managing it, the market is doing it for you. And that is rarely in your favour...

The Brand Balance Sheet

Daily: Mind your micro-interactions. The quick calls, messages and replies shape reputation more than the big moments.

Monthly: Track your reputation deposits.

Let's teleport forward in time and take a glimpse into the future of leadership and personal branding, exploring ideas that have the potential to transform the way leaders present themselves in the digital world. From using biometric data for decision-making to communicating through thought alone, we hope that this collection of forward-thinking ideas will get your brain fizzing and challenge you to think differently about the future possibilities for your professional brand.

No one ever knows exactly how things will play out or how the channels, platforms, and technologies may evolve as we move forward, but here are five futuristic ideas designed to fire up your imagination! (Grab a coffee, it's a long one!)

1. Biometric-Data Leadership

Leaders might use biometric data (heart rate, stress levels, sleep patterns, and other physiological indicators) to inform decision-making, shape leadership styles and build transparency and emotional intelligence into personal brand strategy. I'm sure there will be plenty of applications that even the most vivid of imaginations can't yet grasp, but some examples might include:

Real-Time EQ: Biometric data could provide real-time insights into a leader's emotional state, allowing them to communicate more effectively with their audience, demonstrating emotional intelligence and their ability to adapt their communication style based on their emotional state
<li...Read More

Brandable Careers: "Professional Brand" Is Simply An Outcome

When we discuss "brand" for individuals in leadership roles, public speaking positions, or on any career path, "professional persona" isn't a helpful explanation.

At its core, a personal or professional brand is an outcome. An outcome that evolves over time through deliberate actions and experiences. It’s the culmination of interactions, expressions and perceptions that collectively define how people perceive you.

Let's break it down:

A Long-Term Outcome

Unlike quick wins or short-term achievements, a personal brand is built over time. It's the outcome of consistent actions, messages, and values that resonate with your audience and peers. A strong personal brand isn't established overnight; it's been building for years (depending on how many years you've been at work), and it's the product of sustained effort and dedication to the career path you've chosen.

The Outcome of How You’ve Left People Feeling

One of the most significant aspects of a personal brand is the emotional connection it creates. How do people FEEL after interacting with you? Are they inspired, motivated, or uplifted? The emotions you evoke in others play a key role in shaping your brand's identity.

The Outcome of Public Perception
<p...Read More

Failing Forward: An Effective Path to Career-Brand Success

Ditching the traditional 'working your way up' mantra when approaching your personal or professional brand strategy might feel uncomfortable, but 'aiming high' and embracing failure as a tool for success offers you a refreshing alternative that can give your career brand a significant boost.

Traditional advice often revolves around the steady, incremental ascent to the top - work hard, gain experience, and move up the ladder one rung at a time. While this approach has experience-related value, aiming high consistently outperforms 'working your way up' when it comes to your career-brand strategy and positioning.

If the ambition or goal isn't big enough, you don't need a strategy, but when you set audacious and seemingly unattainable goals, you'll naturally push beyond your comfort zone. This stretch will require innovation, creativity, long shots and a drive to succeed. In contrast, a cautious, step-by-step approach can sometimes lead to complacency, with the focus being on maintaining rather than advancing.

Failure Isn't a Setback: It's One Step Closer to Success

Aiming high means you're more likely to encounter failure, but this isn't a setback, it's one step closer to success. It also presents an invaluable learning opportunity, and by aiming high versus starting at the bottom, you'll inevitably land further along.

By targeting high-impact goals,...Read More

Measuring ROI: Understanding Leadership Brand Value

Measuring the impact of human brand building can’t be approached in the same way as money spent on marketing campaigns versus the revenue those campaigns generate because brand value is inherently intangible, making it difficult to quantify. Unlike tangible assets, brand perception and loyalty are based on consumer emotions and experiences, which are not easy to evaluate.

Brand Impact: Why It's Hard to Measure

Many factors influence brand perception, including word-of-mouth. Measuring the impact of each factor to calculate brand equity is complex, especially when you pair this with a long-term impact that is not yet visible. For example, a marketing campaign might boost brand awareness today, but the actual effect on sales and customer loyalty might not be seen for months or even years; the challenges of measuring the impact of human-brand strategy become more apparent. And then there's subjective perception to consider!

Brand value can vary significantly among different consumer segments, and what one group perceives as a strong brand might not resonate with another in the same industry, adding another layer of complexity to measurement. So how do you disentangle the effect of a personal brand from all the other value-add activities your company is engaged in?

Effective Measurement: Finding the Right Tools

While there are tools and methods to measure brand value, such as surveys, social media analytics, and media...Read More

How many times have you needed something but don't want to ask? I'm sure it's more than once. I'm always noticing a reluctance in people to 'ask,' and I've always lived by the thinking that if you don't ask, you don't know, and if you don't ask, you don't get so I'm going to share, an approach that has always worked well for me. That way, rather than wasting time figuring it out, you can spend that time asking for what you need.

Be Specific: The Art of Asking

Over the years, I've learned that someone in your network always holds the solution, but whether or not you get access to it depends on how you ask. For example: "I need help" or "Can you help me?" aren't great ways to do this. It is unclear, and if you're on the receiving end, responding to a request like this could set you up to fail or disappoint the person asking the question.

First, figure out precisely what you need. Be specific. If you need advice about something, what outcome do you hope to achieve once you've received that advice?

Example: I would like to do more public speaking

To put it into context, let's use "I would like to do more public speaking" as an example.

Why do you want to do public speaking?

If the answer is "to get my message out there," delve deeper. Why do...Read More

While businesses try to act like people, developing values, personalities and a purpose to believe, you have the advantage - you are a person! You already have a tone of voice, stories and messages to share with the world, and with social media only a few clicks away, you have never been closer to becoming a successful brand.

All you have to do is figure out how to make your 'human brand' and your audience come together to create the impact you want in your life or career. If you're thinking about building a meaningful personal brand, don't think about numbers. The number of followers, LinkedIn post likes or blog subscribers certainly have their place, but you won't find meaning in the metrics!

Think about how you can deliver so much value in a niche that people will associate your name with that industry, cause or subject matter.

Shaping a personal brand is not generating an identity for yourself, and it's not looking for what makes you different from others. You are already the proud owner of both of these things.

A personal brand showcases who you are and what matters to you. Sharing your real-life story, not a constructed one, and communicating with the right audience alone will differentiate you from others. When you look at everything you are - your name, your job, your story - you can only go so far, but when you push through any limitations that those things may have created and look at all you can be, that's where transformation...Read More
