The Brand Balance Sheet: The Bottom Line

Reputation isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s your most liquid asset. In finance, a liquid asset is something you can turn into value quickly: cash in the bank, shares you can sell etc.

Reputation works the same way.

  • Every decision is either a deposit or a withdrawal.
  • The yield shows up in the opportunities (or lack of) that come your way.
  • Unlike skills or job titles, it doesn’t depreciate when the market changes direction.

The strongest brands, both personal and corporate, treat reputation as part of their strategy, not as an afterthought.

If you’re not managing it, the market is doing it for you. And that is rarely in your favour...

The Brand Balance Sheet

  • Daily: Mind your micro-interactions. The quick calls, messages and replies shape reputation more than the big moments.
  • Monthly: Track your reputation deposits. Note where you have shown up, delivered or been recognised.
  • Annual: Audit your reputation. Ask a handful of people what three words they would use to describe you, then compare them to the reputation you want to hold.
